Nine lamellar corneal transplants performed in Casablanca by Pr Eric Gabison

Pr Eric Gabison (Fondation Adolphe de Rothschild, Paris) performed nine state-of-the-art lamellar corneal transplants in two days at the Cheikh Khalifa International University Hospital in Casablanca, as part of a mission with the Mohammed VI Foundation for Science and Health (FM6SS). He also trained the local teams in these techniques.

Targeted, less invasive techniques

Unlike full-thickness (penetrating) keratoplasty, which replaces the entire corneal thickness, lamellar grafts replace only the diseased layer: DMEK (Descemet's membrane and endothelium) for endothelial dysfunction, DALK (deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty) for stromal disease, notably keratoconus. They offer faster visual recovery, better functional outcomes and a lower rejection risk.

A training mission too

Beyond the surgeries he performed, Pr Gabison also provided hands-on training for the teams: professionals from the Mohammed VI university hospitals of Bouskoura and Rabat took part, with the aim of standardizing practice and extending access to these advanced techniques across FM6SS institutions.
