Myopia: understanding and correcting it
Myopia (nearsightedness) blurs distance vision: the eye is too long (or too powerful), so the image forms in front of the retina. Several solutions can correct it durably, depending on its degree.

What is myopia?
In a myopic eye, images of distant objects form in front of the retina: distance vision is blurred, while near vision is often clear. Myopia frequently appears during childhood or adolescence and can progress until it stabilizes.
How is it corrected?
Once stable, myopia is corrected with laser surgery in most cases: LASIK, SMILE, or PRK. The choice depends on the degree of myopia and on the thickness and shape of the cornea.
What about high myopia?
Beyond the limits of laser treatment, an intraocular implant may be offered (phakic implant, or lens exchange depending on age). These solutions correct high degrees of myopia while maintaining good visual quality.
An essential assessment
The assessment measures the myopia (which must be stable), examines the cornea (topography, thickness) and the retina. In particular, it rules out keratoconus and guides the choice of the safest technique.
Frequently asked questions
From what degree of myopia can surgery be performed?
Laser surgery corrects mild to high myopia within certain limits; beyond that, implants take over. The assessment determines your eligibility and the best technique.
Can myopia come back after surgery?
The correction is stable in most patients. In young people whose myopia has not yet stabilized, a slight change remains possible; this is why stability is checked before the procedure.
Does high myopia require special follow-up?
Yes, regardless of refractive surgery, high myopia warrants lifelong retinal monitoring.
